PCH Manufacturing pledges support to Fire Door Safety Week

It’s Fire Door Safety Week this week and at PCH Manufacturing we want to raise awareness of the importance of fire doors as they save lives and property.

A door’s a door, right? No, a fire door in an engineered safety device and crucial part of the passive fire protection of every commercial, public and multiple occupancy building.

There are about 3 million new fire doors bought and installed every year in the UK. Fire doors are often the first line of defence in a fire and their correct specification, maintenance and management can be the difference between life and death for building occupants.

Despite this, fire doors often remain a significant area of neglect – often mismanaged through their service life, propped open, damaged or badly maintained.

Fire doors

PCH Manufacturing is one of the few companies in the South West to provide a comprehensive range of composite and timber fire doors rated to 60 or 30 minutes integrity.

We are a Plymouth-based manufacturer of quality windows, doors and more, with the flexibility and capacity to fulfil large orders from housing associations, landlords, housing developments and commercial properties on a supply only basis, or a supply and fit service for one-offs or larger orders.

Why would I need a fire door?

The principles behind passive fire protection is to divide a building into individual fire compartments, constructed and lined with suitable fire resisting materials to reduce the spread of fire.

If a fire should occur, the structure is protected as the fire is contained for a period of time within one compartment, thus reducing fire spread through the building by limiting the movement of flame and smoke.

Containment of fire through effective passive fire protection serves to minimise the damage caused by fire protecting the escape routes to ensure that the building’s occupants can leave the building safely.
The difference between an FD30 and FD60

At PCH Manufacturing we make, supply and fit compliant FD30/FD30s and FD60/FD60s fire door sets in a range of colours and styles to suit a range of different properties.

We are one of the few suppliers to offer a composite FD60/FD60s fire door set, which provides at least 60 minutes of fire and smoke protection for an external door.
